"The Fellowship of the Ring" is the first part of J.R.R.Tolkien"s epic adventure, The Lord of thethe most popular and significant book of the twentieth century.
With this work Tolkien virtually single-handedly created the fantasy genre, and no other writer has surpassed him.
When "The Fellowship of the Ring" was first published in 1954 its effect on the literary establishment was like a pebble striking still water. Attempting to find words to describe it at the time, reviewers were at a loss; the author, Richard Hughes, said: "One can"t praise the book by comparisons - there is nothing to compare it with. For width of imagination it almost beggars parallel, and it is nearly as remarkable for its vividness and for the narrative skill which carries the reader on, enthralled, for page after page." С.S.Lewis was equally enthusiastic: "No imaginary world has been projected which is at once so multifarious and so true to its own inner u-" none so relevant to the actual hum-yet so free from allegory."
The ripples of its impact continue to be felt today.
